FW: PLAYOFFS!?! (and practice)

Hawks!

The Commish just made it official:  For the first time in Hawk history, we’re in the playoffs!  Despite technically losing to the Lawyers on Tuesday, our plucky determination has demoralized our play-in opponents who refuse to face us on the field.

The playoff game is still being scheduled, but it has to happen in the next week and a half.  We’d also like to have a practice before then, but that’s going to be tricky without a firm date for our game.  To help us, please let us know your availability.  Visit our poll at: http://www.doodle.com/wkzrqcnh2wztmrq6

Let’s practice hard and play easy.  We’re still undefeated in the postseason.

FW: GAME TOMORROW vs. the Lawyers

Hawks,

Tomorrow, in front of the new building at 23rd & Constitution, we will be playing our final game of the regular season against the “Lawyers.”

However-- thanks to the heroic efforts by the entire team--this will not be our final game of the year!  The Commissioner has notified us that that we’ve clinched at least a play-in game for the playoffs.  If we win tomorrow, we’re in, but if we lose, we can still win a play-in game to be in the postseason.

Please register online or reply directly to this email so that we know you can make it.  Please note in the “Potluck” section if you can drive people or equipment.

It’s been tough living without softball for the past two weeks, but the wait is finally over!  We’ve confirmed with the opposing team, and tomorrow we face off the Administrative Office of the US Courts "Streetwalkers."   We’ll meet downstairs tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. and leave for 17th & Constitution.

Please register online  if you can make it.  Also, please note in the “potluck” section if you can transport equipment/people or head down early to reserve a field.

See you on the field!

GAME vs. Institute of World Politics (IWP) TOMORROW

Hawks,

Last week’s closely contested game against the NTU/ATR/TFDynamic Scorers” ended with a heartbreaking 11-9 loss despite the valiant efforts of a deep Hawks lineup.  Tomorrow, we look to get back in the winning with a victory over the Institute of World Politics (IWP).   We’ll meet downstairs at 5:30 p.m. and leave for 17th & Constitution.

Please register online to let us know if you can make it and/or transport equipment & people.  Or you can just reply directly to this email.  It is important to do this by noon of game day, so that Coach Hey Mikey (Johnson), can put together a lineup that best utilizes all of our skills.

Please let me know (or post on “Potluck”) if you are able to head down earlier and reserve the field.  This would be a huge help, so please let me know if you can sacrifice some time to start an early warm-up session.

Regarding the last game, thanks to everyone who came out.  We had nearly 30 total people at the game, which is pretty awesome for mid-season, but made it challenging to get everyone involved for as long as we would like.  If you would like more playing time than you have been getting, please come talk to us and Coach Johnson, who is now in charge of lineup and substitution decisions.  Special thanks to Gerard for heading out early to reserve the field; to Janene, Steph, and Jeff for taking care of refreshments; and to Dan Ivan for transporting equipment and supplies.

Just a reminder: Coach Varghese has posted our complete schedule on the blog.  Please note the dates and games below on your calendar, and check the blog for updates as the season progresses.  For those who are interested, the league standings and the weekly league scoreboards are also posted.

GAME vs. Dynamic Scorers TODAY

Hawks,

An update on today’s game.   It looks like there was some rain a little while ago, but that has stopped, and the forecast is calling for drier weather in the evening.  So as of now, the game is still on.

Location:        17th and Constitution
Warm-ups:     6:00pm
1st Pitch:          6:30pm

Let’s meet outside at 5:30.  Dan Ivan will be driving equipment and some personnel down at 5:30.  Christine Mosher will be driving by later (around 5:45) and can take some more folks.  The walkers should expect to get to 17th and Constitution in time to start warm-ups at 6:00.

Gerard McCarthy will be heading down early to try to save us a field.  If anyone else can go with him, it would be much appreciated.  He may need help contending with those kickballers who have all the temperament and none of the class of soccer hooligans.  As a token of appreciation, for every game going forward, anyone who goes early to save a field will have a free beverage of their choice from the team cooler.

Just in case, Anil’s cell is 845.633.4645.  Chris’s is 301.448.2163, but he’ll be late today.

As of now, we’re expecting the roster below.  If we need to add or subtract folks, please let us know soon.

FW: GAME vs. Dynamic Scorers TOMORROW

Hawks,

Building on last week’s 9-2 victory over State (EUR) following a late start, riotous base-running antics, and four solid innings of softball brilliance, we’re looking to improve our winning record tomorrow with a game against the NTU/ATR/TF Dynamic Scorers tomorrow.  We’ll meet downstairs at 5:45 p.m. and head to 17th & Constitution.

Please register online to let us know if you can make it and/or transport equipment & people.  Or you can just reply directly to this email.

USIP Screaming Hawks 1-1, take on State Dept next week

Hawks,

Despite bad weather, we had a great turnout against German Marshall Fund last night. Though we narrowly lost 4-6, it turned out to be a pleasant night and we had a good time. GMF even consoled us with sandwiches, cookies, and chips. As Coach Neu said, it wasn’t as sweet as victory, but it was sweet.

Our next game is next Thursday, June 10 against the State Department’s Europe office. I hope to see you there, although Coaches Neu and Varghese will officially be in charge from here on out. Thanks for everything, and go Hawks!!

Also, heads up that our next game will be NEXT Thursday, June 10 against the State Dept’s Europe office. Our updated schedule will be posted later this week on the Screaming Hawks blog, located at http://screaminghawks.blogspot.com/

Hawks Win First Game of the Season!

Hawks,

USIP started the season off with an 8-4 victory over IRI Tuesday night, thanks to solid hitting, awesome defense by the infield, and several clutch catches from the outfielders. Thanks to all the players and fans who came out for the game! Many thanks also to Kathleen, Craig, and Jeff for transporting players and equipment downtown and to Tyler and Jim for volunteering to play for IRI so they could field a full team.

Our next game is Thursday, June 3 against the German Marshall Fund. We'll play at the field at 23rd and O, where we played Urban a couple of times last year. It's near the woods, so I promise to pick up some bug spray before the game :) Hope you are able to make it--we played GMF in a tournament last year and they were really nice and fun to play against.

Have a great weekend, and I'll be in touch on Tuesday to find out who's in for the game.

Game Today!

Hawks,

Just heard confirmation from IRI that we’re ON for today’s game! We’ve had volunteers to stake out the field early, so we’ll stick with 17th & Constitution as the location. Please take down my cell (803-493-2456) in case we have to move and you aren’t with the group.

We’ll meet in front of the building at 5:20, with hopes of actually leaving no later than 5:30.

The roster is below—please let me know if your status has changed, or if you plan to arrive late or leave early.

Let’s make the first game a win! Go Hawks!

Subject: Game Tomorrow!

Hawks,

Wanted to remind you about our first game of the season, which is TOMORROW against IRI. The tentative location is 17th & Constitution. Please let me know if you can make it! We’ll plan to meet in front of the building at 5:20 and walk down to the field.

If anyone with a vehicle is able to drop off the equipment and a few of the players in a vehicle, please let me know—the help would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone is able to leave early to claim the field, that would be fantastic.

Go Hawks!

First Scrimmage!

Hawks,

Thanks to those who made it to practice on Saturday--after a few ominous clouds, the sky cleared and we had a beautiful morning on the Mall.

We're a GO for our scrimmage against the Forest Service team this Thursday, May 13! Our tentative location is 17th & Constitution. If anyone is available to snag the field let me know, but otherwise we'll plan to meet there between 5:45 and 6:00 so we can warm up a bit before we start playing.

Please let me know if you can make the scrimmage!

I know we're being encouraged to telework on Thursday. I'll plan to come to the office late afternoon to pick up the equipment and cooler. Please let me know if you'll be leaving from the office, so I know whether I'll have help rolling everything downtown--I'll plan to head out around 5:15. There is also a chance of rain but we'll just have to play it by ear.

On that note, if you have not yet filled out the team survey, please do so ASAP--we are inputting everyone's cell phone numbers into an automated system so we can send mass text updates on game statuses, locations, etc. The survey is here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDd5VzJEWENRQ3VpSF9Da2ozaVFmQXc6MQ

Thanks, and Go Hawks!

First Game Scheduled!

We’ve scheduled our first game! It will be Tuesday, May 25 against IRI. Please mark your calendars, and keep in mind our practice on Saturday, May 8 and our scrimmage on Thursday, May 13.

For those who ordered shirts—I’ve placed the order, and it ended up only being $10.50 per person! I was skeptical but customer service has assured me that’s correct. So when you have a chance please swing by and drop off the money. If you want to round up to $11 that’s fine by me, I’ll put any extra money toward our dues. And speaking of dues, if you have not paid them, please add $10 to your shirt payment and you’ll be all set.

2010 Schedule Released

On Wednesday, 9 April 2010, the destiny of the Screaming Hawks was determined after it's division was plucked from a hat (alright, a box). We are in the Greenback Division! It promises to be an exciting year, folks.

Think Tank League Rules Modified

The D.C. Think Tank League (DCTTSL) will follow standard Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) rules, except as indicated in the special rules, which were agreed upon during Wednesday's Coaches Meeting.

Lest ye ever doubt your coaches dedication, just remember that they voluntarily spent a perfectly good weeknight arguing with other nerds about softball rules.
